Nature & Landscapes

I  combine my love of hiking and nature with my love of photography. I look for the grand views, but also for the details. You'll see lots of examples of long exposures and water among my favorites.

Mina Sauk Falls. These falls in southern Missouri only flow at certain times of the year. It's a bit of a hike getting back to them, but I love to photograph water and it was worth it! 3.26.2017. Sony A7II 24mm 0.4sec@f13 ISO100

Nature Up-Close. Look closely at the morning dew on this bamboo shoot. Shaw Nature Reserve is reflecting back in the water droplets. 5.14.2017. Sony A7II 90mm 1/160@f9 ISO800

Nature's Light & Line. Other photographers like to photograph flowers, and I do too at times, but I also look for lines and patterns in the foliage. This succulent at Kew Gardens may not have been the most obviously beautiful plant, but I liked the lines picked out in red against the green. 5.24.2017. Sony A7II 240mm 1/60@f6.3 ISO100

C Tree. I have a favorite place along the Mississippi River, part of the Riverlands area west of Alton, Illinois. There are glassy ponds behind (where this photo was taken) with some walking trails and open to canoeing. A perfect for bird watching and photographing sunsets. 2.18.2017 Sony A7II 32mm .08sec@f22 ISO100

Twilight Tree. I do love to photograph dead or dormant trees in silhouette to bring out the hidden architecture of the tree. This particular tree looks out over the Mississippi River and clings precariously to flood-eroded banks. The sliver of moon at sunset added another dimension. 12.31.2016. Barn Between Storms. I'm particularly fond of photographing barns especially when I'm traveling out west. It was very early Christmas morning (I was trying out my brand new lens!). One storm had just blown through and another was on it's way. In an hour, this scene was completely under snow, but for now the sun shown through. 12.25.2016. Sony A7II 24mm 1/80@f22 ISO250

Tree over Gasconade River. It was a cold morning over the Gasconade River with mists off the water. This lone tree seemed to set itself apart. I loved the blues and whites of this autumn morning. 11.5.2016. Sony A7II 253mm 1/80@f8.0 ISO100

Tree in Silhouette I love to photograph the architecture of trees especially in reflection. I nearly left this scene early as the sunset was disappointing, but I'm glad I waited for I got color just as the sun went over the horizon. 10.3.2016. Sony A7II 28mm HDR ISO250

Barn at Faust Park. I love barns and drive miles to find a photogenic one, but this little-known barn was rolled up in a larger park and sits on the edge of St. Louis. 10.6.2016. Sony A7II 70mm 1/10@f16 ISO100

Fiddlehead 3. Sometimes the hikes I take are a bit strenuous - especially if they seem nearly straight up! In these instances, I put the macro lens on and really try to see the details at my feet (I'm hiking slow enough anyway!) I was fascinated by these unfurled fern fronds which I found out later were called "fiddleheads" as they look like the top of a violin. 3.28.2017. Sony A7II 90mm 1/400@f5.0 ISO800

Sailing On. Some of my favorite nature photos are seascapes including boats. This photograph was taken on a lovely (for Scotland) summer's day on Loch Lomond. I loved the white sails against the billowing clouds. 7.30.2016. Sony A7II 47mm 1/250@f13 ISO200

Deep Red (A Flower I Couldn't Resist). This award winning photo is one of my rare macros of a flower. I just couldn't resist the deep reds! 8.12.2016. Sony A7II 90mm 1/100@f13 ISO500

Edge of Sunset. This photo was taken at Cadgwith Cove in Cornwall (U.K). It is a long-exposure of one edge of the cove at sunset. This photo taught me an important lesson. The sun was setting directly behind me, but sunset light wraps around. 7.20.2016. Sony A7II 55mm 15sec@f22 ISO50
